Titanic necklace stolen

A gold-plated necklace recovered from the Titanic has been stolen from a museum in Denmark. It was reported that the alarm did not sound when the jewelry disappeared Saturday morning.

The necklace belonged to Eleanor Widener, daughter of a Philadelphia streetcar tycoon who survived the Titanic sinking. The Titanic sank in the North Atlantic on April 15, 1912, while making its maiden voyage. More than 1,500 passengers and crew perished.

The necklace is believed to be worth some $20,000 but according to the owner of the exhibit he doubted it could be sold because it is known internationally.

Comcast has launched a new program to offer discounted Internet service and computers to low-income families in United States. The program called Internet Essentials, will “provide low-cost access to the Internet and affordable computers as well as digital literacy training to families with children who are eligible to receive free lunches under the National School Lunch Program,” according to the company’s blog.

Internet service provided through Internet Essentials features download speeds of up to 1.5 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 384 Kbps. The plan costs $10 per month and is available for families that: reside within a Comcast service area, have a clean billing record with Comcast, have no current internet service, and have at least one child who receives free lunch through the National School Lunch Program (NSLP).

Families without a computer can purchase a discounted netbook-style laptop for $149 only. It is equipped with Windows 7, though there’s no details yet on specific brand names or models. Internet Essentials participants will also have access to free Norton anti-virus software, to ensure the PC is kept in top working order.

Beware of imported foods contaminated with DEHP

It is reported that some imported food products and additives from Taiwan may have been contaminated with Di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP). The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is now monitoring the products and tracing its source.

It was only learned when the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office informed the Department of Health that a company may have imported food products containing DEHP. DEHP is used as a plasticizer in the manufacturing of intravenous bags and tubings, blood bags and infusion tubings and nasogastric tubes. Though it is generally safe, high doses or prolonged exposure can have harmful effects. High doses of DEHP or repeated exposure can lead to testicular effects, fertility problems and toxicity to kidneys.

So when you shop, be sure to check if the product is made from Taiwan.
